We trust the good Maker has opened your eyes to the wrongs which you and your fathers have done to me and my fathers, in making us toil for you for generations without recompense. Here I draw my wages every Saturday night; but in Tennessee there was never any pay-day for the negroes any more than for the horses and cows. Surely there will be a day of reckoning for those who defraud the laborer of his hire.

For anyone who believes racism is over, that there is no discrimination in this country, that we are even close to achieving MLK’s dream, please do yourself a favor and read the Yahoo comments. My favorites:

“The sad thing is, when “some” people hear real conservatism coming from a black person, they don’t understand it. This former slaves is saying he would rather work and earn his living the way every person should (conservatism), than live as a slave and get the Master’s handout (wellfare). He would rather dictate where his family lives, where and if they go to church, and that they get an education (conservatism) not have the Master dictate everything (welfare). He escaped and through his actions said: “Give me liberty, or give me death”. True, Tea Party conservatism. This is real, “I work for my money and will take care of my own family”, conservatism that is the true reason why Republicans were against slavery but I would be willing to wager that most people on here who are for some reason “angry’ with the slave and calling the letter fake are registered Republicans. Sad.”
